Endless Opportunities

In the 80’s, when I first started working in China,   my focus was on sourcing precision tools and gages used in machine shops. While the quality of the tools was good, they were often packaged in banana colored, balsa wood-like boxes that would split open easily. I searched diligently for a factory that could make a quality box from a different wood, but none existed. It was frustrating to have to sell a quality tool in a package that screamed “junk,” just because the resources weren’t there for a simple wood box.

Today, a quality wood box – and much more – is readily available in China. Their industrial base is huge; with the right connections (which is what we’re about), products of every kind are easily sourced. Many big name companies now have their product made in China, including Nike, Dell, Apple Computer, Duracell, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, Mattel, Levi-Strauss, and others. At an average labor rate of $1.63 per hour, everything from flash drives to forks are available.

Your opportunities are endless. Rather than being constrained to a certain product line, you have a vast, competitive base of product to draw from. Since true market research is discovering your customers’ needs and then filling them, look for possible additions to your product line outside of what you’re offering now. Once you know the answers, we’ll take it from there and source it from China.

Good Packaging Sells

If your product will be sold to the general public and/or they will physically examine it before making a buying decision, carefully consider the packaging.

People will judge a product by its packaging. Good packaging is colorful but not loud; it quickly grabs the customer’s attention with the benefits of your product and why they should buy it.

There are a variety of options for packaging: cardboard boxes with color labels, plastic containers, wood boxes, metal boxes, clear plastic clamshells with color cards, and printed cardboard boxes. The type of packaging best for your product will depend on its size, weight, and value. For example, a tool worth $100.00 or more would be worth the investment of a custom wood box complete with laser engraved logo. If your product’s retail value is $20.00, a less expensive option would be a better fit.

The best way to design your packaging is to contact a professional graphic arts company in your country and have them design it for you. A U.S. graphic arts company, for example, will be far more in tune with how to design a package that will attract an American’s attention than a Chinese one would. Your graphic arts company will provide you with electronic files that can be emailed, so getting them to the factory in China will be a snap.
